Xperia arc S full details – specs, pictures, videos and white paper

by XB on August 31, 2011
in Hands On,News,Videos,Xperia arc

Sony Ericsson has published the official press release for the newly announced Xperia arc S (LT18i/LT18a). The handset is armed with a single core 1.4GHz chipset (MSM8255T) and will arrive with Android 2.3.4. Sony Ericsson claims that starting up the camera is 25% faster compared to the original 1GHz Xperia arc and web page rendering should be 20% quicker.

Apart from the chipset difference, all other specs/dimensions remain identical to the original Xperia arc. It will come with 512MB RAM and the Adreno 205 GPU. As part of the Android 2.3.4 update the handset will come with 3D Sweep Panorama, which we talked about last week, and Facebook inside Xperia 2.0 that allows you to share details about games and apps.

Except for that, the handset is expected to come with an 8.1-megapixel Exmor R sensor for with improved low-light sensitivity and a Mobile Bravia display, with the same size of 4.2 inches as its predecessor but a slightly higher resolution of 854 x 480 pixels, compared to the 800 x 480 on the original Xperia arc.

Sony also announced the Sony Entertainment Network that will allow Xperia customers to get access to over 10 million music tracks from the cloud based subscription Music Unlimited service and all the latest movie releases from the on-demand "Video Unlimited service". The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S is expected to hit shelves in October.

The Xperia arc S handset will be available globally from October 2011 and will come in five colours: Pure White, Midnight Blue, Misty Silver, Gloss Black and Sakura Pink. You can find the white paper for the Xperia arc S (LT18i/LT18a) here and full specs here. See below for the first promo pictures/videos along with video hands-on impressions from SE-First.

Rumour titbits: Sony Ericsson Nozomi is global phone

by XB on August 25, 2011
in News,Rumours

An anonymous tipster has got in touch with a few bits of information regarding future handsets. First up, he says that the Sony Ericsson Nozomi, the next Sony Ericsson flagship rumoured to run a 1.4GHz processor and sport a 4.3-inch 720p display, will not only see release in Japan (through DoCoMo with model number SO-02D) but will also be released globally. It will come with the model number LT26i / LT26a.

Secondly, we recently wrote about the Sony Ericsson SK19 suggesting it could be a Xperia ray pro. However, he says this model is now cancelled. It was a keyboard slide phone being developed for AT&T in the US and would have sat in between the Xperia mini pro and Xperia pro. The reason we trust him? He told us all about the Xperia neo V before today’s announcement including the difference between it and the Xperia neo. We’ll bring you more news as we have it.

Thanks tipster!

New Xperia neo V announced – cheaper than Xperia neo with 5MP camera [Video]

by XB on August 25, 2011
in News,Videos,Xperia Neo

Sony Ericsson announced a new handset this morning, the Xperia neo V, along with news of the Android 2.3.4 update. However, before you get too excited the Xperia neo V (MT11i) is basically near enough identical to the current Xperia neo but will sport a weaker camera sensor (5MP versus 8MP Exmor R in Xperia neo) and will launch with Android 2.3.4 in Q4 2011.

Now you may be wondering why Sony Ericsson has made this move. Well price is one good reason -- it means Sony Ericsson should be able to disseminate the phone to an even wider audience at a cheaper price. How cheap you may ask? Well according to Mobil.se, it could be 500-1000 Swedish Krona (€55 to €110 at current exchange rates) cheaper. Not too shabby. However, we have been told that the main initiative behind this was down to component shortages following the Japan earthquake earlier in the year. You can find the white paper for the Xperia neo V here. See a video of the Xperia neo V after the jump.

• Screen capture 擷取螢幕畫面-使用者可隨意擷取手機上任何操作或功能畫面。

※ 自 2011 年 10 月起推出的 Xperia 新機,將全面提供新版軟體。

Android 2.3.4 heading to new Xperia range in October [Video]

by XB on August 25, 2011
in Android,Firmware,Imaging,News,Videos

Back in May, we reported that Sony Ericsson were planning to update the 2011 Xperia range to Android 2.3.4 starting from October 2011. Lo and behold this is exactly what they’ve announced this morning. Along with the Android 2.3.4 update, Sony Ericsson will include a new 3D panorama feature and further enhancements to Facebook inside Xperia.

One of the big new features of Android 2.3.4 is that it will allow video chat through Google Talk. If you already use Skype or some other service this is unlikely to mean too much to you. The new Facebook inside Xperia features include the ability to share apps and games with friends/family.

There will also be camera improvements in the form of 3D sweep panorama technology. This means that images can be both captured and viewed in 3D once connected to an appropriate 3D TV via HDMI. For a detailed look at this including some sample images check out SE-First.

Other software improvements include swipe text input (we assume this is Sony Ericsson’s version of Swype), screen capture (take a screen grab from anywhere in the phone) and the ability to control your phone via USB peripherals through the Sony Ericsson LiveDock as seen here. See a hands-on of the new firmware in the video below.

Sony Ericsson LiveDock – use your mouse and keyboard to control your phone [Video]

by XB on August 23, 2011
in Accessories,Videos

The Sony Ericsson LiveDock is due to launch imminently. As you would expect the dock includes the ability to charge your phone or perhaps use it as a stand to watch videos. It also allows you to launch a specific app automatically from the LiveWare manager application such as a desk clock or photo slideshow.

However, another cool feature is the ability to control your handset via a mouse and keyboard. Rog from SE-First aptly demonstrates this in the video below, where he connects a keyboard and mouse to the dock to control an Xperia ray. This allows you to write text very fast. It’s probably a gimmick more than anything but it’s still cool to watch nonetheless.

Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman is the Android smartphone for music lovers

Posted: 2 hours ago, by Nick T.

Those who simply cannot live without their tunes will now meet a smartphone that might be the perfect device to complement their lifestyle. Introducing the Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman – the latest Android-powered device to proudly bear the company's Walkman brand and to proclaim itself as the smartphone that a music lover should own.

One thing that makes the Sony Ericsson Live special is that it turns the simple act of listening to music into a social experience. Thanks to the smartphone's deep Facebook integration, users can easily make their buddies aware of what is currently spinning on their Walkman player. Another neat thing that the Sony Ericsson Live can do is to provide access to the Qriocity music and video streaming services for instant entertainment on the go. Pressing the dedicated hardware Walkman key instantly brings forth the smartphone's Walkman player, which besides playing back your favorite tunes can also search the Internet for more content from your favorite artists.

Besides being a versatile media player, let's not forget that the Sony Ericsson Live is a decent smartphone as well. Under its hood ticks a 1GHz processor, a 5-megapixel camera with flash and auto-focus is located on its back, and a front-facing shooter can come in handy when you are in the mood for a video chat. Its 3.2-inch HVGA display has a scratch-resistant coating and its 1200mAh battery can provide up to 17 hours and 30 minutes of audio playback. The smartphone comes with a 2-gig microSD card pre-installed, and the built-in stereo speakers with xLOUD technology are yet another welcome addition.

The Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman will be available in the fourth quarter of 2011 in select markets. Unfortunately, we have no word yet regarding its pricing or whether it will be sold in the US.

Sony Ericsson SK19i unearthed – Xperia ray pro in development?

by XB on August 21, 2011
in News,Rumours

It may hard to believe but yet another new Sony Ericsson model number has been discovered via a benchmark. The AnTuTu Benchmark registered a ‘SK19i’ handset, a model number we’ve not come across so far. What we can tell from the benchmark is that the handset runs on Android 2.3.3 and has a 1GHz processor, very much in line with the current Xperia line-up.

We would guess that this handset has a 3-inch display and sits slightly above the mini family. In fact if you look at the Xperia ray model number (ST18i) and compare it to the Xperia mini (ST15i) and Xperia mini pro (SK17i) – we can make a sensible guess that the SK19i is a possible keyboard variant of the Xperia ray.

If true, it would be a bit unusual given that one of the virtues of the Xperia ray is its thin aluminium chassis. However, the SK19i could be altogether a different handset. We’ll keep you posted with further developments.

Gmail plugin for Timescape now available.

in Applications,News

Those if you who regularly use the Timescape widget will be glad to hear that Mobile Solution Works over at xda-developers has developed a Gmail plugin. The extension will show messages from your gmail account, although security restrictions mean that it cannot directly open the specified conversation.

Other limitations include the fact that no contact images will be displayed due to the processor/battery overhead. Also, the plugin will not work on the latest version of the Gmail app (2.3.5) due to new security restrictions that have affected a number of third-party apps reliant. To get round this you could always download Gmail 2.3.5 without signature permissions here. This free Gmail plugin is available in the Android Market right now.

Xperia arc and Xperia mini win EISA 2011-2012 awards [Video]

by XB on August 21, 2011
in News,Videos,Xperia arc,Xperia mini and Xperia mini pro

We must have missed this from earlier on in the week, but two Sony Ericsson Xperia smartphones managed to pick up awards in the latest annual EISA (European Imaging and Sound Association) gong fest. The Sony Ericsson Xperia arc won the European Camera Phone 2011-2012, whilst the Xperia mini won the European Green Smart Phone 2011-2012.

The Xperia arc winning the camera award is hardly a surprise with its 8.1MP Exmor R sensor, despite some very tough competition in the form of the Nokia N8 and iPhone 4. The Xperia mini won the award for its green credentials i.e. being made from recycled plastics and sporting reduced packaging. See the EISA justifying their decisions in the videos below.

Luster White Xperia arc spotted (again).

by XB on August 20, 2011

It has been a while since we’ve heard any rumours about a white version of the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc. However, a few photos have emerged from an Xperia ray launch conference in Asia where somebody was caressing this white beauty.

The model was glossy white which fits in with the white versions of other handsets like the Xperia X10, Xperia PLAY and upcoming Xperia ray. We don’t know when this will release (it may even be the Sony Ericsson LT18i i.e. the rumoured 1.4GHz Xperia arc refresh), however we’ll keep you posted. You can see a few larger pictures after the break.
